A- I will sometimes start a picture thinking- What will happen if I work with 3 blues and another color, and maybe more or less of the other color than the combined blues. And very often midway through the work I have to change the basis of the experience. Or, I add and add to the canvas. If becomes overworked and beyond help, I start over.

At the same time that glass reveals, it conceals. If one looks into a glass showcase one can have the illusion that the container is neutral, without apparent interest in the content of what it displays; or, conversely, the appearance of what is contained can be seen as a function of the qualities of the container itself. The use of glass gives another illusion: that what is seen is seen exactly as it is. Through the glass one sees the technical workings of the company and the technical engineering of the surrounding buildings and architectural structure. The glass’s literal transparency not only falsely objectifies reality, but is a paradoxical camouflage for while the actual function of a corporation may be to concentrate its self-contained power and control by secreting information , its architectural facade give the impression of absolute openness. The transparency is visual only; glass separates the visual form the verbal, insulating outsiders from the content of the decision making processes, and from the invisible, but real, interrelationships linking company operations to society. In looking through glass, the interior is lost (one looks through and not at) to the apparent materialness of the outward form, or to Nature (light, sun, sky, or the landscape glimpsed through the building on the other side.)

This piece was installed 85′ underground in the old gypsum mines in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sliding the panels open one entered into the mine tunnels to view the Emerge exhibition. The air temperature is roughly 58 degrees at all times and the sounds of the dripping water are a constant background noise. During the exhibition there was a drumming circle that performed which added to the ambiance of the cavelike atmosphere. Touring the mines are no longer open to the public so this exhibition offered the public a once in a life time experience. Fees were collected at the entrance and donated to the YMCA Domestic Crisis Center in Grand Rapids.

Research for this work was done in Northern Michigan on the Frey Foundation farm. I spent two summers exploring the woods, swamp, and orchards on this 900 acre farm. I was interested in the internal and external experiences of tromping over fields and woods. I rediscovered the feeling of struggling through heavy underbrush and hacking my way through brambles and woods. The success of working through this struggle when nature would give way to the ease of a grassy field was satisfying. I am amazed by the sunlight filtering through the treetops and the dappling of light on the forest ground.
